So far as the rather extreme vocal processors that you might be looking for, I would highly recommend the Antares Vocal Suite - there's probably a demo version somewhere on their website. Also play with the order to better understand how they work together. If you're new to sound shaping in general it might be a good place to start with running the voice sample through individual and combinations of effects, playing with them and seeing what they can do. Every sound processor/fruity effect plugin that you use will change the sound of the signal being fed through that channel.
